Willie and the Wheel taping ticket giveaway

Thursday, February 19th, 2009 by ACL_Blogger

***Giveaway is over. Thanks to all who entered. Congratulations to our winner Craig A.***

In 1975, the Austin City Limits pilot hit the PBS airwaves. This pilot, taped in late 1974, stared Texas country hero Willie Nelson. In 1976, the first full ACL season debuted, with a premiere episode featuring Austin’s Western swing revivalists Asleep at the Wheel. Now we bring the two pioneers together in studio 6A to kick off our 35th anniversary taping season.

Because Willie and the Wheel have so many friends, we won’t be able to offer any Space Available tickets for this taping. We do, however want to give our loyal blog readers a chance to attend the taping. We will be giving away 1 pair of general admission tickets to Monday’s (2/23) taping. Doors open at 7 and the taping starts at 8 p.m. The recipient will be chosen at random from people who enter between now and noon Friday (2/20).

Sarah McLachlan on ACL

Thursday, February 12th, 2009 by ACL_Blogger

I’ll freely admit upfront: I’m not a huge Sarah McLachlan fan. I have nothing against her or her music, which I’ve always respected. She’s just not my cup of tea

After seeing this taping, however, I may have to revise that opinion. She came to studio 6A to promote her greatest hits set Closer; rather than do a full-blown tour, she was doing select dates accompanied only by a guitarist and a harmony singer.

The stripped-down arrangements, combined with the intimate ACL space, really worked to her music’s advantage. The performance highlighted the finely crafted nature of her work, her ability to channel emotion without getting overwrought and her instant rapport with the audience. I imagine some fans might miss the rich production of her LPs, but it seems to me that this kind of presentation is her music’s natural home. It was a gorgeous set.

Find out for yourselves this Saturday (after checking your local station’s listings for the correct airdate, of course). Sarah will be followed by Grammy nominee Duffy.

Gear Blog: Nick Lowe

Sunday, February 8th, 2009 by acl_kevin

It was a given that Nick Lowe would attract a large and adoring crowd when he taped his solo acoustic performance late last year, but even I was surprised at the number of Austin musicians who took the night off to attend his taping. With the likes of Ian McLagan and Cindy Cashdollar in the bleachers, if you looked hard enough, you could make out Jimmie Vaughn in the darkened corner of stage right, never once taking off his shades as Mr. Lowe played an extended set with songs from his latest release, At My Age , as well as a few his classic but never old favorites from his back catalog.

But, that wasn’t my only surprise of the evening. When I walked in earlier that afternoon for Nick’s soundcheck, I was thinking, “One man, one guitar, one microphone, one DI; this is going to be a pretty straightforward set up. Piece of cake, right?”

Right?

Not quite.

A night of roots rock, accent on the rawk: Drive-By Truckers and Ryan Bingham on ACL

Thursday, February 5th, 2009 by ACL_Blogger

This Saturday’s episode of ACL is a gluteus maximus-kicking good time with the Drive-By Truckers and Ryan Bingham. I’d long hoped the Truckers would appear on the show, as it seemed like a natural fit. When they finally got their chance, they did not disappoint. It’s one of the best shows I’ve ever seen the band do, and as fans know, they’re always great onstage. Diehards will be in heaven and newbies will become diehards. Check it out.

Ryan Bingham is a bit more on the country side, but rocks just as hard as the Truckers when he needs to. He gets lumped into the “Texas music” genre, but I don’t hear much similarity between Bingham and the likes of Cory Morrow or Jerry Jeff Walker. Bingham feels much more real - must be all that time spent slogging away on the rodeo circuit. At any rate, it’s also a great performance - Truckers fans will dig it, I suspect.

As always, check your local listings so you don’t miss this excellent episode.
