After a weekly residence at a Stephenville bar, a few self-released albums and with the patronage of Texas music legend Joe Ely, Ryan Bingham signed with Lost Highway and recorded Mescalito with ex-Black Crowes guitarist Marc Ford as producer. Sharp tunes like “Bread and Water” and “Southside of Heaven,” tough production that crosses Townes Van Zandt with the Rolling Stones and Bingham’s soulful, weather-ravaged croon attracted reams of critical acclaim and fans hungry for an update of the Americana tradition. Bingham and his band the Dead Horses now bring that update to his debut appearance on Austin City Limits on October 28.

We will be giving away 20 pair of general admission tickets to the taping. The taping is Tuesday, Ocotber 28th. Doors open at 7 and the show starts at 8 p.m. Enter your name between now and 9 a.m. Monday, October 27. Winners will be chosen at random.

GEAR: Pinetop Perkins

Friday, October 17th, 2008 by acl_kevin

Picture 1.pngFew people will ever have a life that Joe Willie “Pinetop”  Perkins leads. Having to switch from guitar to piano because of knife wounds received from an irate woman only go on to backing some the world’s most famous blues legends, then beginning a new career as a frontman when most people start thinking about retirement, and surviving a car collision with a train (at the age of 91) are just a few adventures of the venerable Pinetop Perkins.

Pinetop played for a packed crowed in the Austin City Limits studios just a short time before his 95th birthday and right after he had gotten out of the hospital for a brief illness; but the man is more spry and energetic than most men a quarter of his age, all while indulging in his daily diet of McDonald’s and cigarettes.  If genetics and luck were a lottery Pinetop would be a billionaire.

"Once" is Broadway Bound

Friday, October 17th, 2008 by Emily_Blog

The LA Times is reporting that the film Once will soon become a musical on Broadway.  Two Tony Award-winning producers have purchased the live theatrical rights to the indie film. It’s inspiring to see this small film (in terms of budgets) reach such amazing heights, though anyone familiar with the excellent soundtrack shouldn’t be surprised.

Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, who starred in Once and won an Oscar for Best Song for “Falling Slowly,” recently taped a show for Austin City Limits that will premiere on January 31st. The taping also featured the Conspirare Youth Choir accompanying them on the aforementioned song, and Daniel Johnston as a special guest. Believe me, you don’t want to miss this one.

Nick Lowe

Friday, October 10th, 2008 by Emily_Blog

Nick Lowe was FANTASTIC last night. You may not know him by name, but you know his songs: “(What’s So Funny About) Peace Love and Understanding?”, “The Beast in Me”, and “When I Write the Book.” This man is a songwriter in the finest sense of the word and delivers it all with charm, elegance and charisma to spare. As Terry Lickona mentioned during his introduction, it is not often that someone appears on ACL with nothing but an acoustic guitar and an amp; that kind of minimalism can be a bit of a challege to turn into good television. But once Lowe started playing, the audience was immediately captivated by his clever, intuitive and amusing songs, and as someone who watched it from the control room, I can assure you it is going to be great television. It was such a pleasure having Nick Lowe finally make his debut on Austin City Limits.
Be sure to catch it when it premieres on January 31st (check local listings)!

Here’s another report on the taping from Austin Music Source, the Austin American-Statesman’s music blog.
