Chapel Hill natives Lost In The Trees wove an intoxicating soundscape for Satellite Sets. “Mixing a swoony sort of craft with occasionally rambunctious rock guitar and swirling strings that echo Terry Riley, the group’s recently released debut, All Alone In An Empty House, is a lush summer surprise” (LA Times).

Designed as a companion to the award-winning long-running music series Austin City Limits, ACL Presents Satellite Sets features both Austin and national bands. The online series will soon feature songs from  The Quiet Company on 9/10.  Other bands already on the site are Leatherbag, Sara Jaffe and Brazos. More bands will be announced as tapings take place. The web series will also feature interviews by the performers about their songs and creative inspiration.

Brad and Michele Moore Roots Music Series

Honored as a “historic rock and roll landmark” by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, Austin City Limits is the longest-running popular music series in American television history. Austin City Limits began in 1974 by featuring original Texas music that ran the gamut from western swing and Texas blues to Tejano, progressive country, and rock and roll. By the time the show celebrated its thirty-fifth anniversary in 2009, its coverage encompassed unique regional, national, and even international performers in an eclectic, ever-expanding range of genres. Austin City Limits has also broadened its live audience beyond its iconic studio on the University of Texas campus with the annual Austin City Limits Music Festival, a three-day extravaganza that spotlights some 150 bands and attracts more than 200,000 fans.

Austin City Limits captures the excitement and energy of the show in photographs by Austin City Limit’s longtime still photographer, Scott Newton. The images span Austin City Limit’s first thirty-five years, with special emphasis on legendary artists such as Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, Leonard Cohen, and Willie Nelson, and the most compelling contemporary performers and bands from the past ten to fifteen years, including Coldplay, John Mayer, Elvis Costello, Pearl Jam, David Byrne, The Flaming Lips, Wilco, Lucinda Williams, and Norah Jones. Proving that he has few peers among photographers of live music, Newton’s images deliver amazing glimpses into the intimate, revealing, and powerful moments in each artist’s performance. They also depict the direct and potent connection between performer and audience that has always been a hallmark of Austin City Limits.

SCOTT NEWTON has been the house photographer for Austin City Limits since 1979. His work has been published on numerous album covers and in many magazines and books, including three books illustrated entirely by his work: two about Austin City Limits (the most recent being Austin City Limits: 25 Years of American Music) and The Improbable Rise of Redneck Rock: New Edition.

TERRY LICKONA has been the producer of Austin City Limits since 1978. He served as chairman of the board of trustees of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences from 2005–2007 and was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Americana Music Association in 2009.

NEW SEASON OF AUSTIN CITY LIMITS FEATURES OLD FRIENDS, FRESH FACES AND A WEALTH OF TALENT AS SHOW TAPES LAST SEASON IN FAMED STUDIO 6A

“This season celebrates one of the most exciting times in ACL’s history,” says series Executive Producer Terry Lickona.

A fitting declaration at the start of any new season, it has never been truer than now as the award-winning PBS concert series prepares to launch its 36th season. In addition to welcoming world-class music stars like season opener, reggae legend Jimmy Cliff, comedian, actor and banjo maestro Steve Martin, famed rockers Cheap Trick, hip-hop and soul greats John Legend & The Roots, indie icons Spoon, and more, alongside rising stars like the young bluegrass sensation Sarah Jarosz, the New Orleans funk/jazz/rock/soul darling Trombone Shorty, and the guitar and drums duo The Black Keys, this season marks the end of an era for Austin City Limits.

It is the last year the show will be recorded in its original studio, which was designated last year as an historic rock and roll landmark by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. In early 2011 the show will move to its new home, a full-time music venue and state of the art production facility in downtown Austin.

“With that in mind this season will acknowledge some of the key artists who have long histories with ACL, while simultaneously showcasing the fresh, new sounds in today’s music,” said Lickona. “It’s great to be able to celebrate the past and the future at the same time!”

Being welcomed back to the historic stage will be series favorites Patty Griffin, Robert Earl Keen, Alejandro Escovedo, Rosanne Cash, Bob Schneider, Lyle Lovett and Spoon. Additional episodes this season will feature Cheap Trick, John Legend & The Roots, Brandi Carlile, Steve Martin, Monsters of Folk, Band of Horses, Sonic Youth, The National, Hayes Carll and The Black Keys plus the October 2 season opener with Jimmy Cliff. Several soon-to-be announced episodes round out this final season in Studio 6A.

The new Austin City Limits studio, developed by Stratus Properties as part of the Block 21 development project, will enable more fans to watch future live tapings and provide an enhanced experience for all future shows, while maintaining the intimacy, character and integrity that have been the hallmark of Austin City Limits for more than three decades.

When it comes to presenting live music, AUSTIN CITY LIMITS embodies its motto of “Great Music. No Limits.” Accomplishing what no other show has done in the history of American television, the series has, for more than three decades, presented audiences with the most diverse, original, cutting-edge talent music has to offer. Staying on the cusp of technology, ACL is broadcast in dynamic high definition and 5.1 surround sound on PBS HD channels where available and airs nationally on 97% of the country’s PBS stations.

With her “stunningly deep and dexterous voice” (Austin Chronicle), Texas singer/songwriter Sarah Jaffe is poised to be a major talent on the music scene. Jaffe and her band perform five songs including the infectious “Clementine.” Also included are “Black Hoax Lie,” “L.U.V.,” “Watch Me Fall Apart” and “Ever Born Again.” NPR picked Sarah Jaffe’s song “Ever Born Again” as its song of the day saying she has an ability to relate to listeners’ daily lives and the wisdom to express emotions in new and powerful ways.”

The online series will soon feature song from Brazos on 8/20; Leatherbag on 8/27; Lost in the Trees on 9/3 and The Quiet Company on 9/10.  More bands will be announced as tapings take place. The web series will also feature interviews by the performers about their songs and creative inspiration.

ACL will also welcome The Black Keys to the studio on Tuesday, October 12th for their first appearance on Austin City Limits.

Any announcements regarding ticket availability and giveaways for the public will be posted on the ACL blog approximately one week before each taping. The sets will air as part of ACL’s 36th season on PBS, premiering this fall. Exact airdates are TBD – we’ll post details as we get them.
