The phrase “always a bridesmaid but never a bride” is overused, but we can’t resist in the case of M. Ward. The Portland singer/songwriter has appeared on Austin City Limits no less than three times as a guest (with Norah Jones, Bright Eyes and Spoon), and now is the time to break the string. The man known as Matthew Stephen Ward to his parents grew up listening to country, gospel and classical music , and first came to attention with the California band Rodriguez before going solo. Combining his country/folk/blues roots with the indie rock sound he explored with Rodriguez, Ward began a distinctive solo career that encompasses jazzy pop melodies, atmospheric textures and guitar technique reminiscent of John Fahey. Records like The Transfiguration of Vincent, Transistor Radio and Post-War have climbed a mountain of critical acclaim. After taking a detour to form the group She & Him with actress Zooey Deschanel, Ward this year released the masterful Hold Time and celebrates its success with his own headlining appearance on the ACL stage.

Sneak Peek of Willie & The Wheel Episode this Sunday - only on KLRU!

Thursday, July 30th, 2009 by Emily_Blog

Program: Austin City Limits with Willie Nelson and Asleep at the Wheel
Time: 7 p.m.
Date: Sunday, August 2

Popout

Viewers in Austin will get an early look at a very special new episode of AUSTIN CITY LIMITS
featuring Willie Nelson and Asleep at the Wheel, which was taped
earlier this year for ACL’s 35th anniversary season. The new episode
marks the first time the two recording legends have shared the ACL
stage, though both have performed many times separately in the show’s
35-year history. The sneak peek event will air on KLRU-TV in Austin on
August 2 at 7:00 pm as part of the PBS channel’s summer pledge drive.
It’s the only chance to see the broadcast until it airs nationally on
November 14.

Longtime fans of the show might recall that Willie Nelson appeared on the original pilot episode for AUSTIN CITY LIMITS,
recorded in October 1974, and Asleep at the Wheel appeared on the first
episode of the first official season in 1976. This new episode finds
Nelson and Asleep at the Wheel performing songs from their recently
released Willie and The Wheel (**** Rolling Stone) as well as classics
like “On the Road Again” and “Always on my Mind.”

Viewers making a pledge during the special August 2 broadcast
between 7:00 and 9:30 pm will receive Willie Nelson and Asleep at the
Wheel thank you gifts, including a limited number of ticket packages to
see Asleep at the Wheel at the famed Lukenbach Dance Hall on August 8th.

Additionally KLRU-TV is giving away 100 pairs of tickets to a special simulcast of the August 10 AUSTIN CITY LIMITS
taping featuring the Dave Matthews Band. Anyone pledging a gift of $100
or more during the first weekend of the pledge drive will be
automatically entered for a chance to receive two tickets.

The 35th anniversary season of AUSTIN CITY LIMITS
premieres nationally on October 3 with Dave Matthews Band. Other
performers in the new season include Kenny Chesney, Pearl Jam, Elvis
Costello, Ben Harper and Relentless7 and more.

Musical Tidbits 7/29/09: Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Levon Helm & more

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009 by ACL_Blogger

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is celebrating its 25th anniversary with, what else, a big concert. Details here. 25 years - you’re still babes in the woods to us institutions reaching middle age. Congratulations.

Levon Helm, former drummer/singer for The Band and recent Grammy winner, is bringing his legendary Midnight Ramble to PBS in August for the special Levon Helm - Ramble at the Ryman. Details and a clip here.

As a contributor to various music magazines and websites over the years, this Slate article on the demise of said magazines caught my eye. What do y’all think? Do music mags have any value in today’s superconnected world?

Musical Tidbits 07/27/09: iTunes, Kris Kristofferson & more

Monday, July 27th, 2009 by ACL_Blogger

* ITunes is reportedly partnering with the major labels to work on ways to entice customers to purchase full-length albums, as opposed to the a la carte method that currently dominates. This brings to mind old axioms about horses and barn doors, but, considering how the iTunes method of digital distribution doesn’t exactly favor the likes of Radiohead and other bands prone to genuine album-length statements, at least Apple is considering something. Details here.

* ACL vet Kris Kristofferson has a new album coming out in September. Closer to the Bone is, according to its creator, a sequel of sorts to his well-received comeback This Old Road. More here.

* The Monsters of Folk, AKA Jim James of My Morning Jacket, Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes, M. Ward and Mike Mogis of Lullaby For the Working Class, have announced tour dates in support of their forthcoming self-titled debut album. You might recall that James and Ward toured with Bright Eyes a few years ago, a portion of which we captured in Season 31’s Bright Eyes episode. So we’ve been looking forward to this for a while. More details here.

* Before he was a Raconteur, Brendan Benson was an underground power pop hero. Finally, he has a new solo album coming out (his fourth). Details here.

Beastie Boys' Adam Yauch ill

Monday, July 20th, 2009 by ACL_Blogger

Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys has a tumor on his parotid gland that requires surgery and, subsequently, recovery. Thus the band is cancelling its upcoming tour (including its ACL taping) and pushing back the release of their next album. Details here. Or you can head to the Beasties’ website, where Yauch has posted a video message explaining the situation.

We at Austin City Limits wish Mr. Yauch well as he goes through this ordeal. We’re sure he’ll be back fighting for his right to party in no time.
